Few people lived in the Neches River bottom as late as 1970. Humans were noticeable only in the occasional cabin or lean-to hunting camps built on the higher river bank ground. In more than one respect, Ertl, long the most celebrated name in diecast toy tractors, is much like Tonka: both were founded shortly after World War II in the basements of enterprising Midwesterners.
